Ondine Viljoen - Jewellery

"Ever since I was a small child, draping myself in strings of colourful beads and sparkly hair grips, I have loved jewellery. It has been a source of joy as well as a way of expressing myself and personalising an outfit.

About 16 years ago, whilst visiting family in a remote farming community in South Africa, I made a delightful discovery, which marked the beginning of a creative, sparkly journey. In a tiny town in the middle of nowhere a friend took me into a seemingly unassuming shop; it was not. We stepped into a treasure trove, full from floor to ceiling with every kind of bead imaginable, from plain wood to beautiful hand-cut crystal!

Having originally been an interior designer but at that time a full-time mum of two young children, there was only so much art and craft that could satisfy my creativity. I started off adorning friends and myself with all sorts of pieces, I set up a craft market selling bespoke, handmade things by various artists and makers, I had a stall at every event I could, sitting up until the early hours while the children slept, surrounded by beads and bits and in my element. I learned a lot along the way, toning down flamboyant pieces of artwork to jewellery that was still unique but much more wearable and appealing to a wider group.

Life, as it tends to, moves on, children grow up, careers change, circumstances change and so do we. Jewellery making is no longer my main focus but it will always be my passion, and making it and seeing people enjoy wearing it will always bring me joy."
